Elephant 6 Recording Company Documentary

This past weekend my wife and I attended the LA premiere of the Elephant 6 Recording Co, a new documentary recounting the brief, but influential Athens, GA psychedelic art collective/pop label/music scene of the mid and late 90s. With Ione Skye sitting just a few seats down from us (obligatory name drop, swoon, and shwing!) we laughed, cheered, and shed tears throughout the screening as we re-lived musical memories from our 20s. Even now the ideas and music still sound so fresh and magical. Watch the trailer:

Afterwards, there was a fun little tribute show featuring guest singers Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, Man Man’s Honus Honus, and Ben Lee (dressed in what can only be described as the Technicolor Dream Coat meets a Snuffleupagus suit). Not to be outdone, the organizers of the screening, including filmmaker Lance Bangs, gathered the audience outside for an “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” sing-a-long. Even my cynical ass got a little choked up (catch me and Stacey at the end of the vid below!)

The doc hits theaters 8/25 and Apple TV and Prime Video 9/1. And if you aren’t familiar with the music, do yourself a favor and start here:
